The systematic breeding program that turned a colour curiosity into a breed. Helen Player Sutherland selected for fertility, mothering, growth, carcase and temperament; rebuilt after the 1945 drought cut the herd to eight; made a Life Member of the Society in 1971. She is credited across three countries as the breed's founder.
